For a high school sports junkie, there are few things like the first day of football practice. It's tempered by the fact that practices are not in full pads, but still the thought of football beginning a new season is an exciting one...
Wednesday I paid a visit to the Macomb High practice... For the first time since 2001, Macomb enters a new year coming off a season where it missed the playoffs. MHS was just one of a record 22 teams with five wins that did not make the 256-team playoff field... The Bombers were No. 260 finishing with 37 playoff points, one point short of the cutoff...
The bulk of the coaching staff returns with the biggest change coming with Max Kreps taking over as offensive coordinator for Steve Horrell, who remains with the staff in working with the younger groups
The biggest change comes in the schedule... gone are P-B-L (3-6), Manual (0-9), Farmington (5-4) and Kewanee (0-9)... new to the schedule are Illini West (12-1), Pittsfield/Griggsville-Perry (8-2), Central/Southeastern (7-3) and West Hancock (2-7) as MHS will be part of the new West Central Conference...
Offensively QB Seth Wickert (59-of-101, 866 yards, 6 TDs) is back, along with RB Chris Jackson (51-331, 3 TDs) return... Defensively Brandon Cousins (31-48-79 total tackles) and Austin Miller (9-38-47 total tackles) are among the returnees...
A number of players will also join the varsity roster from last year's 8-0 JV team that outscored opponents by an average of 40-8 a year ago...
Look for more on the Bombers and other area teams in the coming days as we get ready to start another wonderful, fun-filled school year... as always, the good times will continue to roll as we live the dream...
